Encompassing over 2,100 acres of rugged, heavily forested, mountainous terrain, Bluestone State Park provides a wide variety of water-oriented activities for guests and residents of southern West Virginia. In the midst of this wilderness park, just five miles south of Hinton, are nestled modern cabins, a campground and fine recreational facilities. The extra plus is that Bluestone is adjacent to Bluestone Lake, the state's third largest body of water. At summer pool Bluestone Lake covers 2,040 acres and is 10.7 miles long. Bluestone Dam was constructed as part of the Kanawha River Basin flood control system primarily to reduce major flood damages along the New, Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers. Bluestone Dam was completed for operational purposes in January 1949 and completely finished in January 1952. Several points of historical and recreational interest are located in the Bluestone area. Of special note is Sandstone Falls, just north of Hinton. Bluestone National Wild and Scenic River flows into Bluestone Lake within the Park boundaries. Hunting and fishing opportunities abound at 17,632 acre Bluestone Wildlife Management Area adjacent to the park and nearby Camp Creek State Forest.Water sports permitted. Recommended baits include worms, small minnows, crank and jerkbaits, small jigs, rapalas, tiny torpedoes and nightcrawlers. Seasonality: April through October
