Buffalo Lake was named for the buffalo grass growing around this natural lake formed by a downstream deposit of sediment in 1871.  The north side of the lake has a rather soft mud/silt bottom. The south side of the lake has a sand bottom.  Along with bass and northern pike, pan fish such as perch, blue gill, sunfish, crappies and the occasional muskie are caught.
