Just outside of Mercer, Cool Spring and Otter Creeks converge to form Neshannock Creek, a large trout stream which offers prime fishing in its upper reaches. The stream is heavily stocked, and because many stretches are far from road access, is not quickly fished. A delayed harvest, artificial-lures-only area stretches 2.7 miles downstream from the base of the Mill Dam in Volant. The water warms considerably in this area, however, and access to the creek becomes more difficult. The creek provides good fishing from early spring through June. When the trout fishing slows in July and August, fish the lower stretches for smallmouth bass and panfish. Good trout fishing returns in the fall.
