Winchester Bay is the located within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area headquarters and is known as an excellent fishery.  A 50-mile stretch of sand dunes which offers hiking trails, beaches, 30 lakes, 
fishing, swimming, riding areas, interpretive exhibits, and wildlife watching. Campgrounds extend throughout the area.
 
The Umpqua and Smith Rivers converge a few miles upriver from Salmon Harbor and are home to numerous fish species. Most widely recognized are Steelhead, Chinook and Coho Salmon, and of course the grand daddy of the river system, the sturgeon.
