Salmon River Reservoir , NY

Salmon River Reservoir, often referred to as Redfield Reservoir, is a large remote water body located in Oswego County in the hamlet of Redfield. The main gamefish in the reservoir are largemouth and smallmouth bass, but brown, brook and rainbow trout are also occasionally caught. Black crappie, yellow perch and bluegill can also be found in the reservoir. Fishing the woody structure along the shoreline and the many submerged stumps is a good way to begin your search for the black bass. Good baits are rubber worms, spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits.

Salmon River Reservoir is currently not stocked but was previously stocked with walleye from 2003-2008. During the fall of 2008, a NYSDEC electro-fishing survey was conducted to evaluate the success of the stocking; no walleye were captured during this survey. A follow up survey will occur in a few years to look for natural reproduction. A decision on continuing a walleye stocking program in the reservoir will be made after that survey. Many of the streams entering the reservoir are stocked annually with rainbow, brown and brook trout, and some of them may make their way into the reservoir.
